My 5 year old's name is Collin so on Saturdays he reviews a book. Well, I write it but with his opinion thrown in there. So, welcome to Collin's Corner!
Genre: Children's Picture Book
Review: An elderly couple live in their cute little house but they are very lonely. The very old woman tells the very old man that she wants a kitten. So, off he goes in search of a cat and he finds, not one, but "hundreds of cats, thousands of cats, millions and billions and trillions of cats." He wants the prettiest cat there and soon finds himself taking them all home to his wife. The very old man and the very old woman quickly learn that being the prettiest cat is really not everything and there are more important things they should have been searching for.
This is an adorable little book that Collin had to read for school. Oh, but we didn't read it once, nor did we read twice. Oh no, we had to read it four times this week. Collin was just as excited to read it the fourth time as he was the first and the fourth time he helped me read it to his 3 year old sister. They both loved it and learned some great lessons from it too.
Educational Hint: There are several great things that can be taught from this book but I'll share two that we did for Collin's language arts class (we virtual school). First, it gave us an opportunity to talk about numbers. It was a great discussion about 1's place, 10's place and so on. We talked about the common phrase in the book, "hundreds of cats, thousands of cats, millions and billions and trillions of cats." He learned what each of those numbers looked like and we kept adding zeros just to see what we could get. It was fun.
Next, vocabulary. When we read a book for school, I let Collin choose his vocabulary words and they have to be words he doesn't know the meaning of. The four words he chose from this one were trudge, joyful, lovely, and homely.
Rating: ***** Five Stars (Okay, what Collin really said when I asked him how many stars and specified 1-5 was, "Nine stars, Mom. That means that I really, really, really liked it!" LOL! :)
