Collin's Corner: The Big Tan Van

Share it Please
This is the day that I talk about children's book with a bit of input from my six year old son, Collin. :)

Collin is in kindergarten and learning to read. However, he hates it. I thought it was me and I was doing something wrong. I mean, I read all the time and my husband and I read to the kids all the time and they LOVE it! Collin just doesn't like reading himself. I started thinking about it and remembered how much I despised reading as a child. Finally, when I grew up, I started reading what I wanted to read and not what my mom or teachers wanted me to read and I found that I LOVED reading.

I decided to apply that knowledge to Collin because his little readers that came with his phonics program are very boring with their, "Mom made Sam a ham. Sam ate the ham." Yeah, not exciting. I went to the library in search of their easy readers and found the same type of thing until I came across the "We Both Read" books. AH-MAZ-ING!! :) They are fun just like regular picture books and they get the adult and the child involved with reading together. The left page the parent reads and the right page the child reads. They have levels K-3. My husband even noticed a difference today when I said, "Collin, it's time for you to read." Instead of his normal groan of annoyance at another task it was a, "Yay!"
This one that is pictured is called The Big Tan Van. It is super cute. It's about a child who is so excited about going on a trip with her crazy aunt. The van is strange and their adventures are strange and they kept Collin turning every page. He was so excited about learning what happened next on the adventure.

Rating: Collin said nine stars but since I only give 1-5 on this blog we'll go with five stars. :) *****
