Review: Tally is getting ready to turn sixteen and she cannot wait. She will no longer be ugly and have the facial features and imperfections she was born with that make her unique. Instead, she will be surgically altered to "perfection" and look like everyone else. In her world, this is normal. This is what everyone does. Her best friend is only a few months older than her and turned into a Pretty already and this left her in search of a new friend to hang out with and she finds Shay. But, Shay doesn't want to be a Pretty, she just wants to be herself. She runs away and leaves Tally in a difficult situation. She must either find Shay and tell the authorities where she is or never become a Pretty herself. In her search for Shay she learns the secrets behind her home and society. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss.
I loved this story. I love the message in it... we should be unique and be different and embrace ourselves for who we are because that is truly what makes us special. I also really like Scott Westerfeld books and this series did not disappoint me. You know how sometimes you will find a series of books and you just read right through all of them in just a couple of days. Well, that's how this series was for me. I first read this series three or four years ago and that's how it was. I put one down and had to rush to the library to get the second one. I just couldn't stop reading them. The series was awesome -- well, the first three were and the fourth was okay. The rating at the end is for this book only though. :)
Author: He was born in Texas and now lives in New York City and Sidney. In 2001 he married another author, Justine Larbalestier. He is best known (at least by me) for the Uglies Series and the Midnighter Series. He has also written Peeps (I have not read yet but want to) and Evolution's Darling (I have never heard of). He recently wrote the Leviathan series. I think there are two of those out now but I've only read the first one. The review for Leviathan is here if you'd like to read it.
Rating: ***** Five Stars
